FEMA workers put on leave after letter criticizing Trump administration, Washington Post reports
- On Monday, 191 current and former FEMA employees published the Katrina Declaration, criticizing agency policies and leadership under President Trump.
- The letter, released to coincide with two decades since Hurricane Katrina, warned that budget reductions and policy changes jeopardize disaster preparedness.
- The declaration outlined six key objections and called on lawmakers to elevate FEMA to an independent Cabinet-level agency while safeguarding its staff from politically motivated dismissals.
- More than 20 FEMA employees who signed the letter received emails on Tuesday placing them on immediate paid administrative leave with assurances it was not punitive.
- This suspension raised concerns about whistleblower protections and FEMA's reduced capacity to respond effectively to disasters like recent deadly Texas floods.
