Feds Take Penticton Shooting Range to Court over Land Use
The federal government says the club has refused to leave and wants the land cleared for divestment and environmental remediation, court filings show.
- The Attorney General of Canada filed a petition in B.C. Supreme Court on May 1 seeking to evict the Penticton Shooting Sports Association , alleging the organization unlawfully occupies federal land north of Penticton.
- Agriculture Canada determined the land was surplus to the Summerland Research Centre's needs, prompting the government to terminate the lease as part of a divestment plan announced in 2023.
- After more than 40 years of operation, the PSSA refused to vacate following shifting government deadlines, with the lease officially expiring on Jan. 31, 2026. The government offered a four-month extension, which the PSSA declined.
- Community support remains strong, with more than 10,000 people signing a petition urging Ottawa to reconsider, while 10 MPs across party lines and the RCMP have publicly backed the range's continued operation.
- No hearing date has been set for the petition, and the government declined further comment beyond stating, "We want to divest the property," according to PSSA Vice-President Gary Logan.
