Federal Industrial Court Revival to Solve Disputes
The new federal court would handle workplace disputes and underpayment claims with specialist judges, after workers and small businesses reported delays of more than two years.
- On Thursday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced plans for a new Fair Work Court at the Australian Labor Party Conference in Adelaide, delivering on a long-term union demand.
- The government plans to reinstate a specialist court after 30 years; former prime minister John Howard abolished the previous industrial relations court in 1997, moving jurisdiction to the Federal Court to curb Trade Unions influence.
- Working alongside the Fair Work Commission, the new court will provide specialist dispute resolution for workers currently spending more than two years fighting for simple resolutions.
- Australian Council president Sally McManus welcomed the announcement, stating it recognizes that "rights matter and justice is not only there for companies that can afford law firms from the big end of town."
- Albanese also announced $340 weekly payments for health work students, part of Labor's broader focus on helping Australians with the cost of living amid rising economic angst.
