Federal grand jury indicts man accused of killing former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman
MINNESOTA, JUL 15 – Vance Boelter faces six federal charges including murder and stalking after a politically motivated attack on Minnesota Democratic lawmakers and their families, officials said.
- Federal prosecutors unsealed a six-count grand jury indictment against Vance Boelter, 57, of Green Isle, Minnesota, last Tuesday, for federal charges including murder and stalking.
- Prosecutors said Vance Boelter was disguised as a police officer, driving a fake squad car, wearing a realistic rubber mask and tactical gear, around 2 a.m. on June 14 in Champlin, Minnesota.
- Prosecutors said Vance Boelter shot Sen. John Hoffman nine times and Yvette Hoffman eight times, with their dog gravely injured and euthanized.
- Under federal law, the murder counts could carry the federal death penalty, and the decision on seeking it rests with Attorney General Pam Bondi in consultation with the local U.S. attorney's office.
- Besides federal counts, Vance Boelter also faces state murder and attempted murder charges in Hennepin County, but the federal case will go first, remains in federal custody.
