Obese People See Self-Esteem Soar After Weight Loss Surgery: Study
- A study presented today at ASMBS 2025 by Geisinger Medical Center tracked 5,749 bariatric surgery patients between 2006 and 2019 and found self-esteem scores rose by more than 40 points within one year post-surgery.
- The rise in self-esteem was linked to weight loss magnitude and was consistent across gender, age, race, and surgery type, based on a prospectively maintained database of patients with BMI 35 or higher.
- Co-Author Justin Dhyani emphasized weight stigma adds psychological burdens for patients with obesity, while ASMBS President Ann M. Rogers stressed the need for support and empowerment during patient health decisions.
- Researchers also highlighted that weight stigma contributes to adverse outcomes such as depression and low self-esteem, affecting 19% to 42% of adults with obesity, especially women and those with higher BMIs.
- The study suggests bariatric surgery not only reshapes bodies but can significantly improve self-worth, underscoring the importance of addressing psychological factors alongside physical treatment.
