Heidi Overton said all U.S. vaccines are safe and effective, while senators pressed her on mifepristone, vaping approvals and whether she would challenge Trump.
- On Thursday, FDA Commissioner nominee Dr. Heidi Overton defended the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine during a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee hearing, asserting that every vaccine on the U.S. market is "safe and effective."
- Overton, currently a deputy director at the White House Domestic Policy Council, previously helped shape administration healthcare policies, including an advisory role in slashing the recommended childhood immunization schedule from 17 to 11 jabs.
- HELP committee chair Senator Bill Cassidy pressed Overton on whether she would resist political interference; she replied she would "follow the statutory requirements" of the FDA and provide the President her "best advice."
- Regarding the abortion pill mifepristone, Overton declined to share personal views, stating only that the drug "was approved by the FDA as having met its safety and efficacy standard" while an agency review remains ongoing.
- Overton outlined plans to counter China's emergence as a pharmaceutical leader, telling senators she aims to "restore the primacy of American innovation" through new regulatory reforms Trump instructed her to "go fast" on.
