Gonorrhoea vaccine programme to launch after rise in diagnoses
- Health Scotland and the Scottish government plan to launch a targeted gonorrhoea vaccination programme in August 2025 for high-risk groups in Scotland.
- This initiative responds to rising gonorrhoea cases, including a 9,513 case surge in England in 2023, marking the highest number since 1948 amid growing antibiotic resistance.
- The programme uses the 4CMenB vaccine, normally for meningococcal B, offered alongside HPV and hepatitis vaccines to gay and bisexual men and others at elevated risk.
- Innoviva Specialty Therapeutics announced FDA acceptance of zoliflodacin's NDA, a new oral antibiotic achieving 90.9% urogenital cure rates in a Phase 3 trial versus 96.2% for standard care.
- Together, the vaccine rollout and potential zoliflodacin approval could curb infections, address antibiotic resistance, and offer new prevention and treatment options globally.
