FCCPC reacts to claims of airtime, data borrowing ban
The company said customers can still buy airtime and data through existing channels while it aligns with new licensing rules.
- On Friday, Airtel Nigeria announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services following new regulations issued by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission .
- The FCCPC's Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025, mandates that all digital lenders, including telecom operators, must register with the Commission to operate in Nigeria.
- Femi Adesina, Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, stated the company remains committed to "highest standards of compliance" while aligning operations with evolving regulatory requirements.
- Customers will continue enjoying uninterrupted access to airtime and data purchases through existing channels; Adesina noted the suspension is not expected to have material impact on service delivery.
- The FCCPC previously set an October 31, 2025, registration deadline, later extending it to January 5, 2026, and subsequently to April 2026 to allow full compliance by affected companies.
