Keir Starmer Urged to Intervene in Birmingham Bin Strike
BIRMINGHAM, UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 21 – The Fire Brigades Union urges Prime Minister Keir Starmer to intervene in Birmingham's six-month strike where bin workers face pay cuts up to £8,000, demanding union recognition and fair pay.
- The Fire Brigades Union called on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner to deliver a `decent settlement`, targeting the Birmingham bin strike.
- Earlier this month, Unite bin workers began their dispute over council plans to remove Waste Recycling and Collection Officer roles, which could lead to pay cuts from £40,000 to £32,000.
- Amid faltering negotiations, Steve Wright said: `The treatment of the bin workers has been outrageous`, hundreds attended a solidarity event, and talks collapsed when Acas withdrew.
- Insisting on service improvements, the council added that the government has been working intensively with Birmingham City Council to tackle the backlog and clean up streets.
- Future government warnings, as Jim McMahon warned the council's situation remains fragile ahead of local elections next May.
