Arrest Made After ICE Agent Struck by Fleeing Suspect’s Vehicle in New Jersey
Federal officials say the suspect drove a van into an ICE agent and another vehicle, leaving one agent hospitalized with leg injuries.
On Monday, June 15, 2026, Eduardo Cruz Garcia allegedly struck an ICE agent with his van during a targeted vehicle stop in Manahawkin, New Jersey, prompting his arrest and federal assault charges.
Agents initiated the operation to apprehend Friedrich Castillo-Ormeno, a Peruvian immigrant with a final removal order, after officers observed an individual resembling him enter the van driven by Garcia.
According to criminal complaints, Garcia refused orders to open the van's windows before accelerating and pinning an agent between the vehicle and an ICE car; the officer discharged his firearm as the van fled.
Following his arraignment on Tuesday, Garcia faces up to 20 years in prison for assaulting a federal officer, as U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer described the conduct as an "egregious assault."
Authorities recently noted a 3,300% increase in vehicle attacks against federal officers, while Castillo-Ormeno remains at large as officials continue efforts to remove the immigrant from the country.
