Father of four with stage 4 cancer gets liver transplant from surprise donor
Doctors said the cancer is under control and a living donor is still needed for the transplant, while his brother was ruled out after testing.
Kyler Hess, an Iowa father of four battling stage 4 colorectal cancer, is eligible for a living-donor liver transplant at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
After Des Moines doctors reported limited options, the Hess family sought treatment at Mayo Clinic where Kyler's condition improved, with more than 15 tumors shrinking.
Abby Conley, an acquaintance from Polk City, Iowa, quietly traveled to Mayo Clinic for three days of testing to determine if her liver was a match for Kyler.
Conley felt called to donate in honor of her father, who died in 2021 while awaiting a bone marrow transplant, saying, "I felt awful for them, but then it was that moment where I was like, 'It's meant to be me.'"
Kyler hopes the transplant enables him to witness his children's milestones, stating, "In order to continue on for the future years of watching my kids graduate, walk my daughter down the aisle, see all the big moments in life with them, I had to have that piece I can't do on my own.
