Fatal Truck Accident Claims Lives of Afghan Refugees Returning from Pakistan
On Saturday, a truck carrying Afghan refugees from Pakistan overturned in Laghman Province, killing 22 people and injuring at least 36, said Abdul Malik Niazai, spokesperson for the provincial governor.
Provincial public health director Aminullah Sharif stated the driver fell asleep, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and into a ditch.
Survivors were rushed to hospitals in neighbouring Nangarhar province for treatment, while fatalities included 10 children and five women.
Traffic accidents are frequent due to poor road conditions, as a separate incident Friday night in Nuristan Province left four passengers missing after a car fell into a river.
The UN warns returnees face a humanitarian crisis under Taliban rule, arriving with limited access to housing, employment, or basic services, as nearly 447,400 Afghans have returned from Pakistan this year.
