Longtime Nobu Chef Killed in Crash After Teen Driver Slams Into Him in Malibu

Authorities said the 16-year-old driver survived and did not appear impaired after the Range Rover struck three parked cars, killing a Nobu employee.

  • On Saturday, Ryo Uchimiya, 51, was killed when a 16-year-old driver struck his parked vehicle along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Uchimiya, a longtime sushi chef at Nobu Malibu, died from multiple blunt force injuries, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said.
  • Reports indicate the 16-year-old driver traveled at least 50 miles per hour when he swerved across the "fog line" on PCH and struck the parked vehicle. Surveillance video appears to show the Range Rover veering toward the shoulder shortly before collision.
  • Visiting the memorial to honor Uchimiya, former Malibu Mayor Jefferson Wagner emphasized the severity of PCH accidents. "I've seen 10 fatalities in my occupation of that lease down there at the surf shop," Wagner said.
  • Authorities confirmed the 16-year-old driver survived and did not appear under the influence. The crash follows a tragic collision that killed four Pepperdine University students nearly three years ago, renewing focus on Southern California's deadliest stretches.
  • The city of Malibu is set to begin a warning phase for new speed cameras along PCH next month to prevent future crashes. Preliminary testing data from four cameras recorded about 100,000 speeding violations in less than a month from Sept. 16-24.
