Farage blames Makerfield defeat on anti-Starmer votes
Farage said voters wanted to oust Sir Keir Starmer, while Reform also lost support to Restore Britain in its first Westminster contest.
On Thursday, June 18, 2026, Labour's Andy Burnham won the Makerfield by-election, defeating Reform candidate Rob Kenyon by more than 9,000 votes.
Nigel Farage blamed the loss on anti-Starmer sentiment, claiming frustration with the prime minister drove the "emphatic" Labour victory.
Restore Britain, a new party founded by Rupert Lowe, captured around 7% of the vote in its first Westminster contest, drawing support away from Reform.
Urging Restore voters to reconsider, Farage labeled his party the "challenger party to the left" while expressing disappointment at securing just shy of 16,000 votes.
Elsewhere, the Conservatives won in Aberdeen South, taking the seat from the SNP, while the SNP held Arbroath and Broughty Ferry.
