Aerodrome Issue Update After Pilot 'Seriously Injured' in Plane Crash

Essex Police said the sole occupant was taken to hospital with serious injuries, and no other injuries were reported.

  • On Sunday, August 16, a pilot flying a Turbulent aircraft was seriously injured in a crash at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome in Maldon and was transported to a London hospital for treatment.
  • Amid the active event, Essex Police asked the public to "avoid the area" to allow responders space to work at the scene during emergency response.
  • The Turbulent Team showcased their classic D31 Turbulents, single-seater open-cockpit aircraft that first appeared in 1953, performing complex maneuvers including "flour-bombing, balloon-bursting and limbo-flying."
  • Following the incident, Stow Maries confirmed via Facebook that the site remains closed to the public while reporting no other injuries were sustained at the aerodrome.
  • The Vans RV-8, a high-performance two-seater kit-built aircraft capable of reaching 220mph, was also scheduled to demonstrate speed and agility above the WW1 aerodrome.
