Famine spreads to two more areas in Sudan, the top global hunger authority says

  • Monday the IPC announced famine has spread to two regions, detecting it in el-Fasher, a city in Darfur, and Kadugli, a city in South Kordofan province.
  • After the RSF took el-Fasher in October, reports show sieges like the 18-month blockade worsened food access, leading to famine in the region.
  • The IPC found more than 21 million people, or 45% of Sudan's population, faced acute food insecurity as of September, including about 375,000 in famine and 6.3 million in IPC Phase 4.
  • Humanitarian groups warned that the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification called for a ceasefire as the sole way to prevent further deaths, while Save the Children reported food supplies had run out in Kadugli amid escalated fighting and displacement.
  • The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification noted this is its second famine declaration in less than a year, with twenty other areas in Darfur and Kordofan also at risk amid livelihood collapse.
