Family's heartbreak over dropped manslaughter charge
Prosecutors said the manslaughter count was withdrawn for insufficient evidence, and Marat Ganiev will instead face a charge of attempting to pervert justice.
On Tuesday, Crown prosecutors withdrew the manslaughter charge against Marat Ganiev, 55, who was accused of killing 19-year-old Isla Bell in October 2024 in Melbourne.
The Office of Public Prosecutions cited "insufficient evidence" for withdrawing the charge; Ganiev will instead face a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Prosecutors also discontinued charges against Eyal Yaffe, 59, who was previously accused of assisting an offender and attempting to pervert the course of justice regarding Isla Bell's death.
David Spokes, Isla Bell's grandfather, called the outcome a "very difficult day" for his family but said he cannot speak further due to pending charges.
A new trial date remains unset, though authorities will serve a summary of allegations to the defence within the next fortnight as Ganiev faces the new perverting-justice charge.
