Family pays tribute to 'warm and engaging' man killed in tiger attack
The council has opened a health and safety investigation as the park stays closed and the tiger will not be euthanised, officials said.
On Saturday, 23-year-old William Chapman died after entering the tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster. South Yorkshire Police confirmed Chapman was visiting the park alone when the attack occurred.
Chapman's family described the 23-year-old as a "bright, warm and engaging young man" who suffered from "significant mental illness over a number of years." The coroner will decide what role his prescribed medication played in his death.
Witnesses reported seeing Chapman "dancing with headphones on" before he entered the enclosure and "bowed down, on all fours, started praying" as the tiger, Altai, approached. Video footage captured the moment he approached the animal.
Doncaster Council launched a health and safety investigation into the incident, while the park will remain closed on Wednesday for a fifth day. Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed Altai is "safe and well" and will not be euthanised.
Dr. Campbell Murn, a former member of the Zoos Expert Committee, noted that while safety standards are an "integral part" of zoo regulations, risks linked to "unpredictable behaviour" from visitors can never be entirely eliminated.
