Family of Teen Killed by Santa Ana Police Files Legal Claim, Alleging Officers Were ‘Trigger-Happy’
The claim says officers failed to de-escalate a mental health crisis before fatally shooting 15-year-old Jaden Michaca, attorneys said.
On Tuesday, the family of 15-year-old Jaden Michaca filed a legal claim against Santa Ana, alleging officers were "trigger-happy" and failed to de-escalate the fatal June 14 shooting.
Maribel Michaca called 911 on June 14 seeking a Psychiatric Emergency Response Team for her son, who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was experiencing a mental health crisis.
Santa Ana police reported officers encountered an armed suspect who refused commands, while attorneys for the family alleged Jaden Michaca "never took a step toward the officers."
Attorney Dominique Boubion described the shooting as "100 percent preventable" at Tuesday's press conference, noting that Maribel Michaca suffered a "shattered thumb bone" during the incident.
The Orange County District Attorney's Office, Santa Ana Police Department Homicide Unit, and Internal Affairs Division are investigating the shooting; for mental health support, individuals can call or text 988.
