NH AG Says Matthew J. Masse, 38, Was Killed in an Exchange of Gunfire with Police
Authorities say 38-year-old Matthew Masse fired at family and officers before a day-long search ended with his death and an injured Nottingham police officer.
On Saturday, New Hampshire State Police shot and killed 38-year-old Matthew Masse in Raymond following a day-long manhunt after he allegedly fired at family members and a Nottingham police officer.
Masse's family reported he had been struggling with mental illness, and relatives suspect he set fire to his parents' house on Thursday, prompting Raymond Police to search for him for three days.
Brother Kodey Masse described the suspect's distress, saying, "He was lost, and it was hard for him to find his way back," before officers located Masse in the woods around 10 p.m. Saturday.
The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office is investigating the shooting, with an autopsy scheduled for early this week, while residents in Raymond remain shaken by the violence.
Five fatal police shootings have occurred in the region recently, with several involving mental health crises; law enforcement expert Todd McGhee noted, "We are not trained as clinicians. We are trained as first responders.
