Family and Political Leaders Honour David Andrews’ Peace and Humanitarian Legacy
Hundreds attended the service as family and political leaders paid tribute to Andrews' peace work and a signed copy of the Good Friday Agreement was placed at the altar.
On Saturday, hundreds gathered at St John the Baptist Church in Blackrock for the funeral of former foreign affairs minister David Andrews, with Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Bertie Ahern, and Michael D Higgins in attendance.
A key negotiator of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, Andrews also campaigned for the Guildford Four and Birmingham Six, and became the first EU foreign minister to visit famine-ravaged Somalia in 1992.
His son, Barry Andrews, delivered a eulogy highlighting his father's "integrity," recalling how his father told Muhammad Ali he was the chief whip, leading Ali to respond, "I'll whip you!".
Grandchildren Daniel, Sophie, Eve, Tom, and Kate brought symbols to the altar including a signed copy of the Good Friday Agreement and a fishing rod representing his passions.
Andrews, who died at 91, served as a Fianna Fáil TD from 1965 until 2002, when his son, MEP Barry Andrews, succeeded him in the Dún Laoghaire and Rathdown constituency.
