Families of Pakistani hostages held by Somali pirates for 23 days call for their rescue
Families in Karachi urged authorities to free 10 Pakistani sailors aboard a tanker after pirates reported the crew had run out of clean water.
- On Wednesday, families of 10 Pakistani crew members abducted aboard the MT Honour 25 protested at Karachi's Native Jetty Bridge, demanding government action after 23 days of captivity.
- Pirates seized the Palau-flagged vessel off the Somalia coast on April 21, and the 17-member crew recently reported surviving on boiled rice and dirty tank water.
- The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan expressed "deep alarm" on Thursday, stating "Reports that hostages are surviving on contaminated water and minimal food while their families endure severe psychological distress are unacceptable."
- Pakistan's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi stated the ship owner is currently negotiating with pirates, while noting the government has no direct contact with the captors.
- Hijackings of vessels by pirate gangs have risen again, prompting the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations to issue a "substantial" threat-level warning following at least three vessel seizures off Puntland in April.
