FAI CEO to Appear Before Oireachtas Sports Committee
David Courell said the boycott would have triggered 3 tiers of sanctions and an immediate €5.5 million hit, with total losses reaching €10.3 million.
On Wednesday, FAI Chief Executive David Courell appeared before the Oireachtas Sports Committee, defending the association's decision to fulfill controversial Nations League fixtures against Israel despite widespread criticism.
Courell explained that refusing to play would have risked over €10 million in losses, including ticketing and broadcast revenue, alongside potential UEFA sanctions or removal from the tournament.
While players reached consensus to play, goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrew from the squad as a matter of 'principle' amid the conflict in Gaza.
Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Alan Kelly and other TDs challenged the FAI's governance, with People Before Profit TD Ruth Coppinger calling for the board to resign.
With the Ireland team facing Austria on Thursday, Kelly gave the FAI until next Friday to provide satisfactory answers on safeguarding policies and governance.
