FACT FOCUS: Social media falsely claims heatwave threatens Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and bank
The consortium said storage remains secure as operators reported a 30% jump in cooling energy use and no risk to 500,000 wheels.
Social media falsely claimed that a heatwave in Italy threatened the production of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and a bank storing the cheese as loan collateral.
MGT, which stores 500,000 cheese wheels worth 300 million euros, confirmed that all storage facilities are functioning well despite the heatwave.
Giancarlo Ravanetti, MGT's general manager, reported a 30% rise in energy consumption to keep the cheese storage cool but no operational issues.
The Parmigiano Reggiano consortium stated that heatwaves can reduce milk yields by about 10% but production is currently not at risk.
