RFK Jr. Misstates Canada’s MAID Death Data at Senate Hearing

During a Senate Committee hearing on Capitol Hill last week, Health Secretary Robert Kennedy claimed that medical assistance in dying, or MAID, is the leading cause of death in Canada.
MAID is a legal health service available in Canada for patients with a grievous and irremediable medical condition causing unbearable physical or mental suffering, provided specific federal law criteria are met.
In 2024, MAID accounted for 5.1 per cent of deaths among Canadians, while Statistics Canada data shows leading causes were Cancer with 85,589 deaths, heart disease with 57,982, and accidents with 20,415.
Statistics Canada notes, "The number of MAID provisions should not be compared to cause of death statistics in Canada in order to determine the prevalence nor to rank MAID as a cause of death."
Kennedy was previously the subject of a Canadian Press Fact Check last year after he made several misleading claims regarding measles, demonstrating a pattern of inaccurate public statements.
