Canada is not blocking ships that refuse to honour Lake Ontario name
Fact-checkers found no evidence of a Fox News report, and the Canadian seaway manager said vessels are moving normally.
Viral social media posts claim Canada is blocking U.S. ships at the Welland Canal, citing a dispute over renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America" amid escalating trade tensions.
These claims falsely assert that President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week renaming the lake, citing a nonexistent Fox News report to justify alleged Canadian retaliation.
Serge Auclair, vice-president of commercial and external relations at the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, dismissed the rumors Monday, stating "Seaway operations are continuing normally and have done so throughout the weekend."
Searches of the Fox website, Google, and the Internet Archive found no evidence supporting blocked vessels or renaming demands, undermining the viral narrative.
The earliest version of this claim appears to originate from a satirical X account, though misinformation has since circulated widely across Threads, Facebook, and other platforms.
