Fact-checking Trump's claim that GOP midterm convention audience beat the NFL
PolitiFact said the convention drew about 7 million viewers, far below the 25.1 million who watched the Seahawks-Patriots game, according to NBC Sports.
On Sept. 10, Trump claimed the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas was a "major, sold out hit" that beat the NFL, despite ratings data showing the audience trailed league broadcasts.
NBC Sports reported 25.1 million viewers for the Sept. 10 NFL season opener between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, which aired simultaneously with Trump's convention address.
CNN chief media analyst Brian Stelter found the convention drew about 7 million viewers collectively, while NFL games broadcast simultaneously reached more than 43 million viewers.
The White House cited an X post by Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz claiming more than 70 million combined impressions on TikTok across the convention's first two nights.
University of Massachusetts-Amherst professor Justin H. Gross explains that social media impressions do not equate to engagement, unlike Nielsen metrics requiring at least one minute of viewing.
