FAA Launches Air Taxi Test Program in 26 States
Eight pilot projects across 26 states will test electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft for passenger, cargo, and emergency uses to shape future FAA regulations.
- The FAA and DOT launched on March 9, 2026 a three-year Advanced Air Mobility and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Integration Pilot Program spanning 26 states to test air taxis, regional flights, cargo and emergency medical uses.
- Following an executive order last year, the program aims to gather operational data and develop regulations to accelerate U.S. leadership in eVTOL technology, DOT and FAA said.
- Of more than 30 proposals, eight were selected to include Archer Aviation, Joby Aviation, Beta Technologies and Wisk, with Beta participating in seven projects emphasizing cargo and medical operations.
- The program permits trials prior to FAA certification, enabling Beta Technologies founder and CEO Kyle Clark to start operations about one year earlier, while Archer and Joby saw share gains including a nearly 12% stock pop Monday.
- Despite the promise, companies face hurdles because FAA certification remains multi-year and costly, though the pilots will test cargo, personnel, and autonomous flights in Gulf of America and Albuquerque, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said, 'By safely testing the deployment of these futuristic air taxis and other AAM vehicles, we can fundamentally improve how the traveling public and products move'.
