OpenAI Says AI Model Solved One of Mathematics’ Millennium Prize Problems
On Tuesday, OpenAI announced its internal AI model generated a solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, releasing a 165-page proof and Lean formalization while declining the $1 million prize.
The internal model deployed roughly 10,000 AI agents working in parallel over 88 hours, describing a finite-time blowup where fluid speed becomes infinite at specific points—a phenomenon impossible in nature.
Mathematicians Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpöge disputed the timeline, alleging OpenAI rushed the project after learning of their related research on the forced Euler equations, though OpenAI denied accessing their work.
The company verified the proof using Lean, a programming language ensuring logical validity; OpenAI stated no specific user data was accessed, though it could not rule out de-identified data from product usage improved model training.
