Apple to change app data consent rules, German regulator says
Apple must redesign tracking prompts to be neutral and let developers pair consent requests, after German regulators said the old format favored its own apps.
- On Aug 17, Apple agreed to revise rules governing how Developers use personal data for targeted advertising across the European Union, closing a years-long investigation in Germany.
- The Federal Cartel Office initiated the probe after finding the Apple App Tracking Transparency framework granted its own apps more favorable consent prompts than those used by third-party developers, including Facebook parent Meta Platforms.
- Under these commitments, Apple must redesign consent pop-ups to be visually and linguistically neutral within four months, while third-party publishers gain flexibility to combine data-protection requests.
- These Commitments run for seven years and will be monitored by an appointed trustee, ensuring Apple cannot revert design changes once immediate regulatory scrutiny fades.
