At least 9 dead, 11 injured in UPS plane crash and explosion at Kentucky airport

  • A UPS Flight 2976 cargo jet crashed and exploded Tuesday during takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, killing at least seven people around 5:15 p.m. local time.
  • Because the MD-11 was fully fueled for the long flight, shelter-in-place orders within a five-mile radius were issued and the airport closure lasted until 7 a.m. ET Wednesday, while the National Transportation Safety Board leads the investigation.
  • Video and eyewitness accounts showed several massive fireballs and black smoke over the crash site, with Kentucky Petroleum Recycling hit and two people missing from Grade A Auto Parts.
  • Authorities said at least seven people were killed and 11 injured, some with very significant injuries, while search-and-rescue continued Wednesday morning and 16 families at a reunification center remain unaccounted for.
  • UPS halted operations at the Worldport hub, which processes about two million packages daily and handles over 300 flights; Jefferson County Public Schools canceled Wednesday classes, and SDF canceled more than 10 flights.
