Hawks to Go to AFL over Watson's Disallowed Goal
The league said the umpire correctly ruled Nick Watson ran off his line after the siren, ending Hawthorn’s bid to overturn the call.
On Friday, the AFL upheld the umpire's decision to disallow Nick Watson's goal against St Kilda, confirming he moved off his line before kicking.
During Thursday night's match at Marvel Stadium, Watson slotted an acute-angle goal, but the umpire ruled he ran off his line, disallowing the score.
Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell questioned the call, stating, "There's no common sense about that," while Watson told Kayo Sports he would avoid commenting further to prevent a fine.
The league contacted both Hawthorn and St Kilda on Friday to provide an explanation, confirming the umpire was positioned directly behind the kick.
Despite the controversy, Hawthorn cruised to a 52-point win, with Blake Hardwick kicking four goals and Will Day returning from injury for his first game of the season.
