Cyclospora Outbreak Tops 450 Cases Across 18 States
Michigan has reported about 992 cases and 40 hospitalizations as health officials investigate a source linked to contaminated produce.
Health officials report nearly 2,000 confirmed cases of the parasitic illness caused by Cyclospora across at least 20 states, with Michigan emerging as the primary epicenter of the outbreak.
The parasite spreads through contaminated fresh produce like lettuce and berries, often evading detection because Cyclospora is extremely difficult to culture in laboratories, experts say.
On Wednesday, Michigan reported 992 cases, including about 40 hospitalizations, though Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan's chief medical executive, said aggressive reporting may "part of the reason why this looks like a Michigan problem."
Physicians must specifically request testing for the parasite, as symptoms often mirror other illnesses like viral gastroenteritis, leading to significant underreporting of actual cases.
Investigators have yet to identify a single contaminated source, and while this surge is significant, it remains smaller than a 2019 outbreak linked to Mexican basil that sickened more than 2,400 people.
