Eight UDP MLAs Join BJP in Meghalaya
The defections lift the BJP to 10 MLAs in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly and leave the UDP with four, party leaders said.
- On Wednesday, eight United Democratic Party MLAs from Meghalaya joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in New Delhi in the presence of Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and party spokesperson Sambit Patra.
- Union Minister Rijiju credited the move to the MLAs' admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's performance, stating members were "extremely impressed and influenced by Modi and our BJP-led government's performance."
- This defection increases the BJP's strength from two to 10 in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly, while the UDP is now left with four members; notably, all eight representatives won from ST-reserved constituencies.
- Despite this shift, the BJP and the UDP remain coalition partners within the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance , which governs alongside the National People's Party and other groups.
- The eight defectors include Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, former cabinet minister Kyrmen Shylla, Ollan Singh Suin, Mayralborn Syiem, Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah, Balajied Kupar Synrem, Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah, and Pius Marwein.
