NHS told to help fat jab users keep weight off
UNITED KINGDOM, AUG 4 – Demand for weight loss jabs has surged 1,300% in private clinics as NHS eligibility remains strict, with plans to treat 220,000 patients over three years in England.
- The NHS has been recommended to monitor patients for at least a year after they finish treatments such as Wegovy and Mounjaro to help prevent them from regaining lost weight.
- This guidance follows evidence from drug trials showing patients regain about two-thirds of their weight after stopping injections and highlights the long-term nature of weight management.
- Wegovy is available on the NHS for individuals with significant health issues related to their weight, prescribed for up to a two-year period. Over the next three years, it is anticipated that Mounjaro will be provided to approximately 240,000 eligible patients based on their BMI and associated health conditions.
- Jonathan Benger from NICE stated that successful weight management continues after medication stops, requiring structured support to maintain positive changes, while Kamila Hawthorn emphasized there is no one-size-fits-all approach to obesity treatment.
- These developments suggest a shift toward combining medication with lifestyle changes and ongoing support, implying the NHS must enhance prevention and post-treatment care to effectively combat obesity.
