EXCLUSIVE: U.S. Border Patrol chief retires after historic drop in illegal border crossings
Banks said his team cut illegal entries by 95% and added more than 2,000 agents while expanding barriers and retention efforts.
Mike Banks, the U.S. Border Patrol chief, has reentered retirement after 37 years in public service, achieving a historic 95% drop in illegal border crossings during his tenure.
Banks initially retired after the Biden administration's immigration policies resulted in at least 14 million illegal crossings, but Gov. Greg Abbott recruited him as Texas Border Czar in January 2023 before President Trump appointed him to lead the federal Border Patrol.
Border Patrol agents now total more than 21,000 following recruitment of 2,000 new agents and another 2,000 at the Border Patrol Academy, while more than 100 miles of new border wall, 600 miles of concertina wire and 10 miles of marine barriers were installed.
Banks stated the border transformed from 'the least secure in America's history' to 'the most secure in my lifetime,' and federal agencies shifted from opposing Texas to true collaboration, with Banks deputizing more than 2,000 Texas National Guard troops.
Banks' Texas enforcement model now serves as the blueprint for Trump administration border policy nationwide, with 1,400 miles of wall and 550 miles of marine barriers contracted for future construction.
