Outkast’s Trademark Company Sues Rapper Ovrkast, Claiming He Reneged on Deal to Drop ‘Nearly Identical’ Name
The suit says Silas Wilson agreed to drop the OVRKAST name and adopt OVERKXST, but continued using a name OutKast says could confuse fans.
- On September 16, High Schoolers LLC—the trademark company for hip-hop duo OutKast—filed a federal lawsuit in Georgia against Oakland-based rapper Silas Wilson, accusing him of trademark infringement and breach of contract for using the stage name Ovrkast.
- Wilson previously agreed to transition to the stage name Overkxst by July 15, but the company alleges he failed to complete the change, resulting in a breach notice on August 5 with an August 11 compliance deadline.
- Citing a 2025 Rolling Stone interview, attorneys for the duo argue Wilson acknowledged that fans mistake his name for OutKast; the suit alleges the name was chosen to "cause confusion…or deceive the public."
- On Tuesday, September 22, Wilson posted a screenshot of a news report on Instagram, tagging OutKast members with the caption, "I thought it was love ."
- This suit follows a similar legal battle where OutKast settled a lawsuit in February 2026 against an EDM duo using the name ATLiens, which was coined for their 1996 album.
