Ex-MSNBC Host Joy Reid Reveals How Tamron Hall Helped Her After She Wept Over Her Looks
Reid said she later built her own glam team after finding no Black hair or makeup staff at MSNBC, where she felt her image suffered.
Former MSNBC anchor Joy Reid was honored at Derick Monroe's Behind The Scenes Beauty Day, where she discussed beauty challenges faced during her early career at the network.
Reid revealed she lacked a team who understood Black haircare and skincare, noting, "There were no black hair and makeup people" in the studio when she started, causing significant distress.
Fellow host Tamron Hall intervened by marching into management's office, stating, "This is unacceptable. This sister deserves better than this, and this has to change." Hall demanded hiring staff who understood different hair and skin types.
Now hosting her own daily YouTube show, Reid curates her own glam team and ensures that guests of all shades and sizes look beautiful, prioritizing representation in visual media.
Monroe's event also honored Rihanna's stylist Ursula Stephen, Oprah's makeup artist Derrick Rutledge, and Oscar-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell, underscoring the value of specialized beauty expertise in media.
