Exclusive: DHS Plans to Launch Voter Fraud Investigation Surge Tuesday
HSI will pursue investigative leads, conduct field interviews and support prosecutorial review as more than 24,000 potential noncitizen cases are referred from SAVE.
- Starting Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security is launching a coordinated criminal voter fraud surge initiative to pursue investigative leads and conduct field interviews across select states, according to internal federal guidance reviewed by CNN.
- Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has accelerated efforts to align the department with President Donald Trump's hunt for purported widespread election fraud, targeting potential non-U.S. citizens who may have illegally registered or voted.
- While the department touted an audit identifying more than 250,000 potentially registered noncitizens, internal records show only 185 cases were confirmed in Nevada. The SAVE system has processed over 60 million verification queries since April 2025.
- Justice Department guidelines historically discourage overt investigatory actions during election periods to avoid chilling legitimate voting. However, as an independent department, DHS is not obligated to follow this long-standing policy, the guidance indicates.
- Experts say there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud in recent elections, though investigative actions are expected in nine states—Washington, Wisconsin, Missouri, Georgia, California, Pennsylvania, Nevada, New York and Connecticut—through mid-October.
