Exclusive-CXMT plans second chip plant in Beijing and is in talks on its funding, sources say
The chipmaker is seeking at least 60 million yuan in support as it expands capacity amid a global DRAM shortage.
- On Monday, CXMT began financing talks with the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area to build a second memory-chip plant in Yizhuang, southeast of central Beijing.
- Following its $8.6 billion IPO last month, CXMT pursues major expansion as Chinese local governments compete to attract the memory chipmaker during a chip upcycle fueled by AI infrastructure demand.
- Building leading-edge DRAM chips typically costs more than $10 billion. CXMT currently operates two 12-inch DRAM fabs in Hefei and one in Beijing, each with capacity of about 100,000 wafers per month.
- CXMT is seeking at least 60 million yuan in support from the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, which hosts tech firms including SMIC, Naura Technology, and Xiaomi.
- Although CXMT remains smaller than Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron, whose combined global market share approached 90%, the company is key to Beijing's drive to build a self-sufficient chip industry and narrow the gap with the U.S.
