Former West Virginia officers sentenced to decades in prison for their role in deadly inmate assault
BEAVER, WEST VIRGINIA, JUL 9 – Two former correctional officers were sentenced to 20 and 21 years in prison for assaulting inmate Quantez Burks, who died after the 2022 attack at Southern Regional Jail, prosecutors said.
- In March 2022, Quantez Burks, who had recently been detained at the Southern Regional Jail, died after being violently attacked by correctional officers.
- The assault occurred after Burks tried to leave his assigned pod, leading officers, including Mark Holdren and Johnathan Walters, to forcibly restrain and attack him in an unmonitored interview room.
- Burks was handcuffed, struck multiple times, kicked, pepper-sprayed, swung into a metal door by Walters, and dropped onto a concrete floor before emergency personnel declared him dead.
- Multiple officers pleaded guilty or were sentenced: Holdren received 20 years, Walters 21 years, Wimmer 9 years, and Toney was sentenced to 78 months for failing to intervene, with Snyder and Boothe’s sentencing scheduled for July 10 and Fleshman’s for July 14.
- The case prompted a $4 million settlement for inmates, led to high-profile firings, and highlighted a sharp rise in jail deaths, prompting continued legal and public scrutiny over SRJ conditions.
