Ex-teacher sexually abused and smothered baby he adopted, jury told
Prosecutors say Preston Davey suffered about 40 injuries and was sexually abused before his death, while the defendants deny all charges.
- On Monday, the murder trial of teacher Jamie Varley and salesman John McGowan-Fazakerley began at Preston Crown Court, with prosecutors alleging Varley killed 13-month-old Preston Davey.
- Preston went to live with the defendants in April 2023, but prosecutors allege the couple 'routinely ill-treated' the baby, inflicting roughly 40 injuries including a fractured arm during his four months in their care.
- On July 27, 2023, the day Preston died, Varley allegedly sexually assaulted the baby and recorded footage of him showing respiratory distress instead of seeking medical help, the court heard.
- Both defendants, of Chandlers Way, deny all charges, including accusations that McGowan-Fazakerley failed to protect the child as the trial proceeds with a jury of six women and six men.
- Prosecutor Peter Wright KC warned the jury to "steel themselves" as this is "a highly emotionally charged case" involving the death of a very young child, the court heard.
