Ex-priest accused of stealing $750,000 from Pennsylvania churches
Madeya is accused of stealing more than $750,000 from three churches and nearly $250,000 from his mother, prosecutors said.
- Former Ukrainian Catholic priest Gregory Madeya waived his preliminary hearing last week on fraud charges, choosing to take his case directly to court in Jeannette, Pennsylvania.
- Police arrested Madeya last month at his Florida home, alleging he stole over $750,000 from three churches in Derry Township, Jeannette, and McKeesport, plus nearly a quarter of a million dollars from his mother.
- The judge set a $25,000 bond, requiring Madeya to surrender his passport and remain in the commonwealth; defense attorney Patrick Thomassey noted, "This case involves a tremendous amount of paperwork."
- Madeya remains housed at the Westmoreland County Prison while awaiting his next appearance at the Westmoreland County Courthouse on October 14.
- Defense attorney Patrick Thomassey suggested the case highlights issues regarding how the Catholic Church manages parish funds, stating, "There are no guidelines for what the priest can or cannot do with the money that they're responsible for.
