Ex-Pentagon Officials Warn China Could Overwhelm US with Propaganda in Taiwan Crisis
Former Pentagon officials said Beijing’s gray-zone tactics could trigger a Taiwan crisis and urged stronger deterrence before Trump meets Xi.
On Thursday and Friday next week, President Donald Trump will visit Beijing for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirming the agenda includes Taiwan alongside economic discussions on tariffs and rare earth exports.
Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi identified Taiwan as "the biggest risk" in bilateral ties during a recent call with Rubio, signaling Beijing will likely raise the issue during the upcoming summit.
At a Washington forum yesterday, former Pentagon official Ely Ratner warned that Beijing's "gray zone" activities pose growing short- to medium-term risks, urging stronger military capabilities to deter blockades and interceptions.
Randall Schriver, chairman of the Institute for Indo-Pacific Security, said Trump aims to build on a temporary trade truce reached in Busan, South Korea, last year to establish a durable framework covering Chinese rare earth exports and tariffs.
Schriver expressed confidence that Trump will represent U.S.-Taiwan interests during the summit, while maintaining that robust deterrence through stronger military capabilities and alliances remains essential for managing cross-strait security.
