- As Senate president, Richard J. Codey succeeded Gov. Jim McGreevey after his Nov. 15, 2004 resignation; state law then provided the Senate president would serve the remaining 14 months, and Codey was Senate president from 2002 to 2010.
- He went undercover at a state psychiatric hospital, exposing staff abuses that led to major reforms, and as governor, Codey established a Task Force on Mental Health and signed bans on contractor contributions and smoking indoors.
- Gov. Phil Murphy said `If anybody embodied our proud New Jersey values, it was Governor Dick Codey`, while Codey's family called him a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who inspired many.
- Raised above his family's funeral home in Orange, New Jersey, Codey worked as a pallbearer, began picking up bodies at 14 with Donald Codey Sr., taught in East Orange, and joined the New Jersey Legislature in 1973.
