Former Naxal Women Walk Ramp in Traditional Sarees for National Handloom Day, Symbolise Successful Rehabilitation
Former women Naxals wore traditional handloom sarees and walked the ramp, highlighting rehabilitation efforts as 108 Maoist cadres surrendered in Bastar in March.
- On Friday, August 7, nine surrendered Naxal women walked a fashion ramp at Raipur's Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium for National Handloom Day, showcasing traditional Kosa silk sarees from Bastar.
- This event followed the state's "Puna Margem" rehabilitation campaign, which helps former Maoists integrate into society through skills training in tailoring, weaving, and other trades.
- Participant Deve, 31, trained four to five hours daily, adjusting from chappals to heels. "For the first time, we saw a beauty parlour, wore fancy clothes and walked in front of a large audience," Nandini, 18, said.
- The appearance reflects a broader security shift in Bastar, which Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared "Naxal-free" in May, underscoring the government's push toward development and public participation.
- Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma met Union Minister for Rural Development and Agriculture Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi earlier this week to seek infrastructure relaxations for Bastar.
