Ex-MI5 contractor flew to Latvia to pass secrets to foreign power, court hears
Juan Joseph, 42, faces five charges including breaches of the Official Secrets and National Security Acts after seeking to disclose classified information amid mental health struggles.
- At the Old Bailey, Juan Joseph, 42, is on trial after flying to Riga to try to pass secrets at an embassy, with proceedings due to last up to 2 April.
- Joseph worked as an IT contractor for MI5 from September 2009 until October 2020, and raised grievances including a private prosecution in August 2024 and a judicial review in November 2024, allegedly sending sensitive emails.
- On his return to Gatwick, Joseph refused police access to five phones, a laptop, and a tablet, and officers found two photographs, two emails, a homemade MI5 ID card, and a signed Official Secrets Act declaration at his home.
- Facing five charges, Joseph denies wrongdoing and jurors must decide if paranoid schizophrenia affords an insanity defence, after hearing he was 'labouring under a terrible delusion'.
- The judge, Mr Justice Hilliard, told jurors 'In this case some of the matters have got to be dealt with in closed proceedings', and the media and public are excluded from evidence about 'one or more countries' and damaging information.
