Ex-Liverpool coach Matt Beard 'bullied' by Burnley, hearing told
The coroner will seek evidence from Burnley FC and football officials as Beard’s family says leaving the club worsened his mental health.
On Thursday, a pre-inquest review took place at Ruthin County Hall examining the death of former football manager Matt Beard, who died on September 20, 2025, aged 47.
Debbie Beard, the widow, told the hearing she felt her husband was "bullied" by Burnley FC, claiming his departure "was the catalyst for a decline in his mental health."
Beard's stepson, Scott Beard, raised concerns about social media posts he described as "quite damaging" to the manager, who had won back-to-back Women's Super League titles with Liverpool Women in 2013 and 2014.
Senior coroner John Gittins will invite Burnley FC to become an interested person in the proceedings while making enquiries with football agent Curtis Dawes and the League Managers Association.
Burnley FC stated it is "aware of an ongoing legal process and will not be making any comment at this time," as the inquest has been adjourned to a later date.
