Disney’s Former CEO Bob Chapek Blasts Bob Iger Over His Disney Firing
Chapek says Iger sabotaged his tenure and defends park price hikes, while citing a $1.5 billion streaming loss and board pressure.
- Four years after being ousted, former Disney CEO Bob Chapek blames predecessor Bob Iger for his downfall in his upcoming memoir, 'Behind the Castle Walls: My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth,' publishing Sept. 29.
- Chapek's turbulent two-year tenure ended abruptly shortly after Disney reported a greater than expected $1.5 billion streaming loss. He claims Iger, who handpicked him, intentionally sabotaged his leadership to regain control.
- In the book, Chapek alleges Iger exited in 2020 to avoid dealing with Covid and told Hollywood figures Chapek was shutting him out. Defending his record, Chapek writes, "My abrupt dismissal hurt my reputation... The answer, again, is nothing."
- Disney officially denies Covid influenced the leadership transition. Meanwhile, Iger, who returned as CEO before stepping down earlier this year, recently joined Thrive Capital and purchased a controlling stake in the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion.
- Despite his unpopularity among fans for controversial price hikes at Disney World Resort, Chapek credits himself with helping current CEO Josh D'Amaro rise to the top. "I consistently suggested the idea of promoting him," Chapek writes.
