Ex-college basketball player Kerr Kriisa admits demanding $9,000 from victim in fraud scheme
Kriisa admitted to a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme that prosecutors say used false identities and fabricated emergencies to target two victims.
On Thursday, former West Virginia University men's basketball player Kerr Kriisa pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud, U.S. Attorney Matthew L. Harvey announced.
Prosecutors alleged that since 2022, Kriisa defrauded victims of nearly $2.2 million by creating fictitious personas, including his own mother, to fabricate family emergencies.
In February 2026, Kriisa posed as "Irene" to demand $9,000 from a victim, and he previously signed a fraudulent agreement promising $100,000 repayment he never fulfilled.
Kriisa faces sentencing on December 22, 2026, with prosecutors agreeing not to recommend more than 24 months in prison under the plea agreement.
"Financial fraud is not a game, and those who choose to deceive and exploit others will be held accountable," Harvey said, pledging continued partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
